Building a backyard pond is an excellent DIY project. If you want to build a pond, there are some important things to consider before you begin: what materials and equipment will you need, location considerations and the steps involved.
You will need a pond liner to keep water in your pond. To calculate the size of liner needed, take the pond width, add it to the depth multiplied by two and add 24 inches. The length is calculated the same way. It is also a good idea to have pond underlayment below to protect the liner from punctures and damage from rocks or roots. You will also need a pump, filter and tubing, and rock to edge your pond and for a waterfall if desired.
When deciding on a location for your pond, remember that it should be where you will enjoy it. A location visible from a window is ideal. Putting it in a back corner of your yard may be a reminder as to why you never use that part of your property.
Shade and sun is important to consider. If you plan to have water plants in your pond they will need at least partial sun. Having your pond in a sunny spot will also reduce freezing in winter which can save money if you plan to keep fish. If your pond is in sun or partial sun a Pond UV Light is recommended, and if it is under a tree, you will likely need a pond skimmer.
When designing your pond, think about whether you want plants in it and if so, what sides of the pond you want them on. The pond will need a plant shelf, about 18 inches deep and one foot wide, along the edges where plants will be. Many garden ponds have waterfalls. If you want a waterfall, decide roughly where it will go and how high and steep it will be. Add a waterfall filter or weir to the list of items needed.
The steps to build a pond are straightforward. First, plan it and make a sketch of your design. Next, dig out the pond and put in the underlayment and pond liner and fill it with water. Trim the liner and add rock edging. Then install the pump, filter and tubing. Finally, de-chlorinate the water and slowly introduce plant life and fish.
A garden pond is an attractive addition to any backyard. Building a pond is a practical project for many homeowners to undertake themselves, and the pond itself can provide enjoyment for years to come.
