Pond Food
Pond Food plays an important role when feeding your koi and goldfish. Your pond fish food will need to be nutritional and well balanced.
Pond fish have a diet based on which season it happens to be. The seasons are determined by the temperature of the water. During the spring and fall, when water temperature is between 40°F and 65°F you will want to feed your pond fish a wheat germ based Koi Food that can be easily digestible. When the water temperature is between 65°F and 85°F during the summer your fish will have a higher metabolism and should be fed a high protein diet.
Protein is needed for tissue formation and growth. Koi need higher levels of protein then goldfish. Feeding a high protein pond food when the water temperature is cooler can lead to poor water quality. The excess protein gets converted to ammonia.
Do not exceed the amount fish will eat within five minutes. Over feeding can lead to poor health and can be a cause for algae problems.
There are many different foods. Some will enhance the color of the fish, others have extra minerals and vitamins and some even have fruits and greens. Find a koi fish food that your fish will enjoy but also make them active and healthy.
