| Specially formulated for the nutritional needs for koi and goldfish in the cool water seasons Reduces ammonia produced in fish waste Provides a stabilized form of Vitamin C for boosting disease resistance Contains wholesome plant ingredients, vitamins, minerals and spirulina algae to intensify fish color Long floating pellets soften quickly even small fish can feed Because fish are cold blooded animals, their metabolism is controlled by the water temperature. In the cool seasons of spring and autumn, fish metabolic activity is greatly reduced, compared to their rates of metabolism in the summer months. Thus pond fish do not require a high protein diet in cool water. In fact, feeding high protein food in cool seasons is detrimental to water quality in the pond. Excess protein in food offers no benefit to the fish buy is simply converted to ammonia and excreted, which can lead to toxic levels of ammonia in pond water. There is greater potential for ammonia toxicity in the spring and autumn. In spring, fish become active and start feeding before the biological filter has recovered from its winter dormancy. Feeding a high protein food in the spring can result in an ammonia surge, stressing fish and leading to outbreaks of disease. In the autumn, fish are still feeding as the water cools; meanwhile the biological filter is becoming less active, increasing the possibility of dangerous ammonia concentrations in pond water. Directions for using Spring and Autumn Fish Food: When water temperature is cool, 42° F to 70° F, feed pond fish two to four times a day, in amounts no greater than they can consume within a few minutes. This product can also be used in the summer when adding new fish to a pond, thereby preventing increased ammonia while the pond's biological filter adjusts to the greater fish food. |
