If you need or want to have a certain flow and are trying to keep your electric cost down yet you need a pump that will either give you more flow for a dramatic waterfall when having company over or just trying to backwash your pressurized filter a variable speed pond pump maybe your choice. You will be able to keep it at 1725 rpms and then when needed for that extra flow run it at 3450 rpms.

External Waterfall Pumps

The most important metric when shopping for external waterfall pumps is the flow rate that they will produce. On Average 100 gallons of water per inch will give you just under ¾” thickness of water. Depending on the visual of the flow will depend on the gph of the pump and the total dynamic head. Just because a waterfall pump has a maximum flow doesn’t mean that you will see this amount of water. It will depend on how high the water has to get pushed up vertically, size of tubing or piping, the length of pipe including any elbows and if there is any pressure head such as a pressurized filter or UV that is being used inline.

Self Priming Pond Pump

One of the very few disadvantages of an external koi pond pumps is the priming requirement. Unlike water, air is compressible. Any air gap in the flow of water can cause the pump to lose suction. To avoid this possibility, a good self priming pond pump is needed. In some cases, you can have the pump lower than the water for an easy prime and in others a check valve beneath the waterline is needed.
